AP BIOLOGY WORKSHOP @ St Louis High

Just before school started, I attended AP BIOLOGY workshop from July16 - July 20, 2012.  I decided to incorporate some of the labs we performed in general biology class.

More I teach more I realize, I must keep things simple and try a few if I decided to go the whole nine yard I will not try any.

Following are some of the laboratory exercises I am going to incorporate into my biology class next semester:
1.  Transpiration lab (AP Laboratory Book) - Photosynthesis Unit
Write weight for each day on the plant (impatiens) ; Weigh the leaves at the end to control number of leaves; and Mist before weighing & cover.  You can use different variables.  Check notes from Mel below (data included).

2.  3-2-1 Fast plant genetics - order from carolina  - Mendelian Genetics Unit
Order:  F1 Rosette Dwarf Seeds & F2 Rosette Dwarf Seeds (Fast Plant Seeds)
Grow in a petri dish F1 F2 ;  Grow within 3days; and to determine the heredity.

3.  Online virtual Fruit fly genetics  - Sciencecourseware.org - Mendelian Genetics Unit

4. Candy Cladogram - classification

5.  Cell Race - Cell unit BTB agar

6. ID the sugar concentration using carrot or potato - Cell Transport Unit

7. Floating Leaf Disk Lab - Photosynthesis Unit

8.  Animal behavior lab.  We used fruit flies but I am going to use pill bugs in petridishes.
Refer to Campbell Pearson Lab Bench http://www.digitalwebb.com/Downloads/LabBench/Start-Here.html

9.  Toothpick-ase Lab
10. Some evaluation techniques
- Grade first w/ red pen, then purple pen , then green.
- In reporting data/lab work - have 1/3 of class do powerpoint , 1/3 do lab report, and 1/3 file folder presentations.
