Last school year, I taught two biology class. Passing rate was about 50%. Usually most of my students pass, so this was a new experience. I knew going in that last year's students had a tough time with tests but the result was lowered than expected.
Hawaii DOE 84% completed the exam & % breakdown are: 30%, 40%, 25%, 5%
(percent breakdown - below proficient, approaching, proficient, above proficient)
Baldwin - Kekaulike complex: 94% completed & % breakdown are: 32%, 41%, 21%, 3%
Baldwin High School : 94% completed & % breakdown are: 34%, 40%, 22%, 4%
This year, I have one class of biology (and an AP). My approach - focus on making concepts stick and focus on skills like graphing. Also making sure I put enough time into genetics which seems to be the focus all the time on the exam. I felt so bad when students did not pass the exam and looked so defeated. I hope to see better results next year.
