PLS 4 Designing Effective Instruction
Presenters - Dawn Paresa, Michelle Palafo, and Miki Kubo

Day 1.  Connector - reflection on the last session (which I took couple of years ago):  Analysis of Student work and Admin.-Mentor communication Log.
Morning
Opened with understanding standard based lesson plan.  Conclusion - CCSS is a process of producing competent individual so look at all of the standards instead of breaking it down to grade level.
Must check it out again! - Great video on how students learn

Tools/worksheet to use for lesson planning:
  • Planning for Effective Instruction Lesson Planning Tool
  • Lesson Plan:  Backward Design
  • Instructional Grouping

Afternoon
Gradual release model visited with differentiated instruction.  Be sure to add the reflection/metacognition portion to the lessons.
Flexible grouping discussed according to the need of the class.  Many times, we group them for classroom management with one student leader in each group.  This year I have been more flexible.   I would like to try grouping by interest and learning style/multiple intelligence.

Day 2. Connector - 3 Cs.  Communication, Collaboration, and Coordination

Morning
Importance of giving specific feedback using mentor language to mentee discussed.
Mentoring Standards and Elements --> as mentors, need to evaluate self.

Taking a PD class with mentee will allow for more conversation.

Afternoon
We practiced mentor language through role plays and were introduced to advocate

Finally self assessing process of mentoring practice was introduced.

Overall, the session was very informative and useful.  This year my mentee had to leave teaching due to her personal situation.  However, these practice will be useful for myself this year and for future mentoring practice.
