Science Olympiad Coaches Trainng Workshop- Maui

On Saturday18th of September, Science Olympiad Coaches Training Workshop was held at Maui Econonic Development Board Board in Kihei high Tech Park.  The workshop was led by Franklin Allaire, State Director, and assisted by Flaviana Ancheta, Maui Director.

This is going to be Baldwin's first year participating in the Science Olympiad.  I learned a lot from the workshop and am excited to get the ball rolling.  At the regionals, students will compete in 5 events (January 29, 2011).  Once we make it through the regionals, students can participate in the state where they will compete in 15 events (March 5, 2011).  Nationals is held in Wisconsin this year in May where they compete in 23 events.  Usually a pair of students can participate in each event and they can particpate in more than one event.

Our science teachers have been willing to coach the team and so far I have commitment from :
  • Mr. Starbuck - mousetrap vehicle  (I hope he can do fossil event too)
  • Ms. Romero - any biological science (probably diseases detective)
  • Ms.  Oshiro - chemistry and chemistry lab (redox)
  • Ms.  Huntley - anatomy and physiology
I will coach whatever events that does not have a coach.  Good News! Our principal, Gwen Ueoka, is willing to help out with the funding. Hopefully, we can secure some money in October.   I will also be writing for some grants to fund the program.

Lastly, I would like to thank Isla Young and Shannon Paapanen from MEDB (WIT) for supporting the workshop.  Of course such event would not have been possible without your help.  Mahalo.
