Vernier Workshop - July 18, 2011

David Carter led the Vernier Workshop at Seabury Hall from 1pm to 5pm today.  Baldwin purchased eight basic Vernier probe packs (including the Lab Quest) and I wanted to learn how to use them.   In attendance were three teachers from Seabury Hall (Evelyn Lacanienta, Sherri Reed, Gladys Lacanienta); Diane Banks from Kalama Intermediate school; and myself (Amy Ancheta) from Baldwin.

I am planning to use thermometer probes for calorie calculation (peanut) lab; pH probe for pH of household products and for titration lab; conductivity probe for properties of compounds lab; and gas pressure probe for Boyle's Law lab.   I'm so excited to use them next school year.

Some cool built-in features in LabQuest like graphing of periodic table trends is an excellent way to show not just trend up and down and across the table but it is also a good way to teach the relationship between atomic radii and ionization energy in the periodic table.

In addition, Logger pro is a great software not only for chemistry and biology but for biotechnology as well.  I am planning to use the electrophoresis gel analysis feature for my biotechnology class.  It does semi log graph and calculates bp as well.

Only one week left before the next school year.  I feel refreshed and ready to start.
