Today we, Delta Kappa Gamma sisters, helped out with welcoming new teachers. We provided yummy food and refreshment so the program would go smoothly. We all wore red shirts to show unity as well. I have to find the pin. Forgot to wear it today.
After setting up food, I talked to Gayle, our president, about a lot of things including our current contract talks with the state and about how it affects the new teachers and retirees. It was really interesting to hear her perspective since it's something that I never thought of. For example, currently all retired teachers can cover their spouses' medical but the new teachers coming in this year will not be able to cover their spouses once they retire. Of course as a new teacher, I am sure they are just happy to get a job and are not really looking at their retirement plan. For me, when we were entering they took away the contributory retirement plan which I was not aware of until I started working. That just meant I had to save for retirement on my own. Then retirement talk led to talks on our national debt.
All in all, it was a very interesting day. The new teachers look very enthused. Ready to start. The energy in the room was great. I am excited for this school year as well. :-)
