One the second and the third day of this school year, teachers were trained in a learning model called SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol). It follows Medeline Hunter's lesson plan format (which I have been trying to adopt in my class) but focuses on students' clear understanding of the "language" of subject.
I liked the model but in trying to keep things simple I decided to implement just "one thing" from what I learned - the "exit" pass. So far (after about a week of implementation), it has given me a better understanding of my students' learning progress. I have been able to focus on particular students who are having greater difficulties in class. Also, I learned to slow down a lesson as needed.
If you have been using SIOP, please comment on this blog -what you implemented and how it has help you in your class. Have a great new year everyone.
