Instructional Mentoring Workshop (8/26 - 8/27, 2013)

It was a two day long workshop where we were taught to become mentors for beginning teachers.

Day 1.  The focus was on building trusting relationship with mentees.  Main content for the day was the FAS (Formative Assessment System).  We are applying FAS in our professional growth (help mentee's growth).  It's constant assessment and feedback. Helping mentee to reflect on their own teaching.  Helping them to grow.

Day 2.  The importance /of building a positive, respectful, trusting relationship was discussed again.  This mentor/mentee relationship will not work without the relationship.  Today's content was on CAL (Collaborative Assessment Log).  It is a great tool to use in assessing and developing plans for the new teacher.  I was so happy to receive such a great tool.  It is something I can use for myself as well.  Everyone commented how it helped to focus on small, specific area.  This type of targeted goal setting can really help the new teacher to grow.  Only thing is it is hard to use the language of a mentor.  It has to be tactful.  A lot of paraphrasing and indirect questions.  I hope I can start using such language in my conversations with new teachers.

Overall the session was very useful and was worth my time in coming out of classroom.  I am specific tools I can use in my classroom as well.  I wrote them down.

1.  Making a T-chart and laminate.  It can be used for many activities.
2.  Make students reflect on reflections of others.  Great for biotech class.
3.  Sudden literature was fun too.  Bring on an article on them.  Great way to have them think.
4.  For group work, random & quadrant partner was fun too.  Yes, there was elbow partner share too.

I have some to take back.  I am glad we don't have to do this right away, hopefully.
