Tommy, Lauren and Marie were our three instructors.
This is the second leg of the mentor training session. Today we learned about how to observe our mentee. We were introduced to pre-observation planning conversation. Four questions I need to remember to ask the mentee are:
1. Where are you going with your students and why?
2. How will you know when your students understand it?
3. How do you plan to get there?
4. What are you interested in learning along the way?
We then were introduced to three observation tools: selective scripting, seating chart, and content, strategies, & alignment. All had different purposes. I know I will have a hard time writing selective scripting. So fast.... I need to take a lesson in short-hand.
As I reflect, there are a few things I need to keep in mind. I need to always go back to mentor language and teacher standards. I need to collect data and help the teacher see her classroom. Finally I need to let the mentee to be autonomous and be able to reflect on her own teaching. I need to guide her there gently. Finally I remember what Lauren said. Give yourself grace of time. Time to learn, time to develop, time to rejuvenate. Yes, this process will take time but I can see how powerful this process can be. It will benefit so many children as we touch new teacher's hearts and minds.
