Articulation with Iao School - Feb. 12, 2014

In an effort to streamline curriculum from grade 6-12, we had our staff meeting at our feeder school, Iao Middle school.  We met with three of the six science teachers there:  Laura Smith, Mark Cunningham, and Faith Medley.  We discussed three essential skills/knowledge that and the standards they addressed.  Below are the notes from the meeting.  This is the second meeting since our first one in 2013 (end of last school year).

Iao Intermediate School & H.P. Baldwin High School Science Teachers

Three Essential Skills/Knowledge for Grades 6 – 12 in Science
1.  HCPS III Standard 1
Be able to conduct scientific investigation
- scientific inquiry
- scientific method
- lab safety
- measurement
- vocabulary

2.  HCPS III Standard 2
Be able to apply knowledge to real world situations
- Research  skills with the ability to cite evidence
- reading non-fiction science text

3.  CCSS  Reading Standard 1
Cite specific textual/experimental evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts.

CCSS Writing Standard 1
Provide a conclusion statement or section that follows from and support the information/explanation/claim.

Note:  Both can be derived from student driven experiment or non-fiction science texts


Comments:  We need to work on doing scientific inquiry and finding common vocabulary.

We also presented the baldwin complex science website which was started after our meeting last year.  


I am looking forward to working with the Iao team in an effort to help students.
