This year we only have four official new teachers at Baldwin. Our full time mentor teacher will be assisting three and Wade one. I will be working with Michelle Brown, a veteran middle school teacher from a private school, Seabury Hall. Couple of things to keep in mind - she is from middle school and she is from private school sector so she has to get used to the DOE jargon.
Quarter 1
August 21, 2014
Mentor/Mentee meeting at P-15. I attended the meeting with Michelle. Jill Sarchet, our full time mentor teacher conducted the meeting. She passed out some valuable information for new teachers. She also told us that we have option of attending the meeting because Michelle is not a brand new teacher (only new to DOE).
In the following week we talked about getting ready for Open House. Baldwin's open house was Sept. 3, 2014 (Wednesday). I shared with Michelle some ideas for Open house. She seemed to have had a pretty successful open house.
September 14, 2014 (Sunday)
We were able to get together today around 5pm to work on finishing the survey online on PDE 3.
September 18, 2014 (Thursday)
Mentor/Mentee after school meeting. Instead of meeting after school with the new teachers' group, we decided to go on our own and meet in Michelle's classroom.
We discussed some non-instructional issues - Classroom observation. We discussed how observation questions can be answered online. I gave her a copy of my observations answers from last year. Hopefully, it will help her. I offered to observe her classroom.
I checked up on her on the following week to see if you was doing ok with her observation. She completed her observation and was now able to focus on completing SLO.
At the end of 1st quarter, we discussed plans for next quarter and how to wrap up 1st quarter. Michelle will be doing an engineering project in November, Bridge Building.. I already purchased the materials and set up for testing out bridge.
Quarter 2
This quarter we started working on SLO. In addition, we had short discussions on our CCSS writing samples which are due every quarter to administration.
October 23, 2014 (Thursday)
We had a discussion on bridge building. I am currently teaching forensic science and biology. Bridge building could not fit into my curriculum so I am not able to offer her too much help.
December 04, 2014 (Thursday)
Michelle was able to make bridges with couple of her classes before Thanksgiving holiday. It seemed like it required a lot of coordination. My hope was to bring excitement to science for young 9th graders and recruit students for Science Olympiad competition. This is an area I still need to work on better coordination.
December 11, 2014 (Thursday)
We had a discussion on failing students. Michelle was reflecting on number of failures in her class and wanted to target students that were close to passing. She evaluated their progress on jupiter grade (online grading program) and their overall progress in class. She selected/targeted a few from each class. Way to go!
During Winter break we met to work on Clicker Technology. I use it daily to check on students' understanding of the previous day's lesson and also use it as a connector between previous lesson and that day's lesson. We ran into some difficulties because I do my clicker on a PC and hers was on mac. I hope to work on this again in the beginning of next school year. I love clickers and hope she can utilize it too.
Quarter 3
During our PD sessions (four times a week) we sit together and have short discussions as needed. We also get together on Sundays as needed.
February 02, 2015 (Thursday)
Classroom management issues were discussed and CSSS (Comprehensive Student Support System) tiers discussed. During the week I shared a differentiated strategy sheet with Michelle. We had an excellent mentor "differentiated instruction" training session where I found a cool three page strategy sheet. I am so excited to apply them in my class.
March 05, 2015 (Thursday)
We worked on Tripod Reflection together for couple of hours. It was fun to dissect the result together and to bounce off some ideas to improve instruction next year.
April 19, 2015 (Sunday)
We met together to discuss Danielson Domain 4 write up. Michelle was able to complete and upload to PDE3. Michelle also work on one of the required growth plan for new teachers - knowledge of SLO. We also talked little about our current curriculum. We are planning to work on end of the year lab curriculum together.
April 24, 2015 (Friday)
Michelle came in period 5 to work on SLO. I answered questions she had. She stayed back in my class during period 6 to work on her SLO. After shool we worked on our SLO until 4 pm. Michelle thought we had to upload everything by Friday afternoon but I assured her it's not due until 24 hours before the conference. She was so relieved. :-)
April 27, 2015 (Monday)
Michelle came in during period 6 and worked on her SLO in the back of the room. Afterschool, she continued her work. She said it was good to work in my room because I had quick answers as she was completing her work. I am glad she feels that way. I am glad to help her. :-) I am grateful to all the teachers who helped me along the way in the beginnings of my teaching career.
As I reflect on mentor/mentee session, I think use of CAL (Collaborative Assessment Log) would have been a great way to keep log of our sessions. It would have made the meeting more meaningful and would have been a good way to log our conversations.
May 4, 2015 (Monday)
We had a quick debrief on my SLO conference. Michelle's SLO is on Wednesday. I hope everything goes well.
August 4, 2014
We had a short 10 minute conversation on Tuesday, August 5 regarding any needs that she might have. She'll be going over scientific method and I offered some ideas. I hope to work with her on some scientific method lessons.
August 13, 2014
Michelle came in during period 6 class to observe gak lab. She liked the lab and also liked the fact that I was asking students about the procedure before we began.
She is thinking about doing the lesson some time next week. I think I am going to give her my set up so she does not have to think too much about the set up.
I am so glad to work with her.
Note: I accidentally deleted post which logged all my meeting times and working with Michelle. I found part of my log from cached/published portion online. I will write what I remember and as I go along. I'd better publish and never delete posts using my phone again.

Note: We started working on SLO this quarter SLO but it was put on the back burner as we focus on data team and program analysis. Michelle is on physical science teams so we don't have much interaction but she did express concerns with a hostile teacher in her data team. I felt so sad that it happened. I did asked if she wanted mediation but she knew what to do. I am so thankful that she is able to handle situations so well.

Quarter 4
This quarter we have many deadlines to meet: Growth Plan, SLO final, Danielson Domain 4 write up, Data Team analysis, and CCSS student samples with reflections. We looked at some deadline dates and shared some strategies to meet all that are required.
April 09, 2015 (Thursday)
We reviewed Growth plan and Michelle logged her progress. I helped review the document.
