Wonderful labs and lectures!!! We can't wait to start incorporating what we learned. In the lab, we learned to perform PCR; pour 1% agarose gels,; and run PCR products on the gel to check for presence of HIF gene. We also met with Steffen who works for JABSOM Genomics Core. He is the "tech" guru. Guess what? For a small charge, he is able to sequence DNA for us. Wow! I see student research in a very near future.
For the"meet the scientist" time, we met with Dr. William Boisvert. We learned about possible benefits for Interleukin - 10 in macrophage cells in prevent atherosclerosis. It was informative and inspiring. Lastly our good colleague from Farrington High School, Lenore, shared with us her paper DNA fingerprinting lab (one that she performs with a cash register tape). Thanks, Lenore.

I was astounded to learn during this "Meet the Scientist" talk with Dr. William Boisvert that atherosclerosis is even seen in neonates. I definitely shared this with my health service students, and took this opportunity to reemphasize the incredible responsibility that goes with making the decision to create a baby within ones own body.
I really appreciated Dr. Boisvert's presentation because he was able to explain his topic (Immune-mediated mechanisms in atherosclerosis)at a level I could understand clearly.
