Mentor Level II Training - Session 3: Differentiating Instruction to support Diverse Learners

February 2-3, 2014 (8:30am-3:30pm)

The presenters were Danielle and Michelle.

We started the session with successes we had with learning differences.
+Building trusting relationship
+Clear expectations
+Specific feedback
+Making connection
+Providing safe environment
+Not giving up on them (enduring/resilience)
+Supportive relationship

We have diverse learners and we need to reach them.  This workshop gave me some tools to reach them and help the mentee reach them.

  • Remember to put myself in the shoe of my students struggling and their parents (& their frustration).
  • Know acronyms to different types services for diversity  - IDEA (Individual with disability education act), RTI (response to intervention), IEP (Individualized Education Plan), and GT/GATE (Gifted and Talented).
Both documents below can be used for SLO, observation, or family meetings.
  • Share Classroom Accommodation Checklist with my mentee.
  • Share Differentiating Instruction sheet with my mentee.
  • FAS tool  - Communicating with Families (great way to prepare for a parent meeting).

As always these mentor session are so helpful.  I am so glad I attended this session.  It will help me with my national board certification, too.
