The session was only about an hour long but it was packed information. In attendance possible candidate at Baldwin School: Diane Nakoa, Cathy Knowlton, Hannibal Starbuck, and Amy Ancheta (me). Cecelia Romero and JoAnn Oshiro, NBCTs from previous years, stayed back to answer questions as well.
Information from the session:
I had three questions to ask initially. They were clearly answered.
1. How do you register? Go to boardcertifiedteachers.org to register and the registration cost is $75.
2. Simplified steps to approach the process. See my next steps below.
3. How to get reimbursement for national board certification process? Register first then follow up after submitting portfolio and getting certified.
NBCT - National Board Certified Teachers (acronym to learn) :-)
Evidence of 5 core proposition
There are five core propositions that all accomplished teachers should show evidence of. In the board certification process we need to complete four components to show these evidence.
- Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
- Proposition 2: Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
- Proposition 3: Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
- Proposition 4: Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
- Proposition 5: Teachers are members of learning communities.
Cost of the Process - $1900 (lowered from $3000) and can be done in three years where it is $475/component.
- C1 - Content Knowledge
- C2 - DI
- C3 - Teaching Practice and Classroom Environment (video taping)
- C4-Effective & Reflective Practitioner
Of the four components, we can complete C1 and C2 this year.
March 14, 2014 - Application Window Opened, $75 registration fee
Feb. 28, 2015 - Eligibility Verification form and Full payment due
April 1 - May 15 - Electronic Portfolio Submission.
March 2- June 15 - Testing Window
My next steps:
1. Select date for field testing online This will help me prep for C1.
2. Pay $75 and register at boardcertifiedteachers.org
3. Get my Verification forms submitted and make full payment before August.
4. Schedule testing dates and get resources
5. Work on DI this year and get Electronic Portfolio done during Spring Break.
I think I have much better handle on the process now. I really like that fact that it is rolling out in three years. This will put less time constraints on my family. Also it will help me reflect on each component.
Thank you so much Camile for a wonderful session and look forward to working with you as I strive to improve my teaching practice for my students.
